Protester Waves Blood-Colored Hands in Rice`s Face

An anti-war protester waved blood-colored hands in U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's face at a congressional hearing on Wednesday and shouted "war criminal!", but was pushed away and detained by police.

Rice, an architect of President George W. Bush's Iraq policy, appeared unfazed by the incident, which occurred when she entered a House of Representatives meeting room to testify at a hearing on U.S. Middle East policy.

"Out!," shouted the chairman of the Foreign Relations committee, Rep. Tom Lantos, as police moved in to hustle the woman protester away.

Lantos, a California Democrat, also demanded the removal of several other demonstrators from the Code Pink organization, an anti-war group that often disrupts hearings on Capitol Hill.

"What are you doing, what are you doing?" the protesters screamed as police dragged them away.

Cheap Chinese goods remain a problem

Hindutva hawks and right-of-centre BJP liberals are in contention but most party strategists realise that an inclusive coalition is more likely a winning ticket than an exclusivist Hindutva platform that repels likely anti-Congress partners in another NDA-type alliance. Indias diversity is too heterogeneous to be straitjacketed.

The Congress for its part should not be paralysed by fear of elections and fail to press forward with reforms and to govern as it did over much of 2007. Populism as an election strategy is bad enough; allowing governance to be swamped by populism while in office is worse. The Congress was stymied by the Left as well as by its UPA partners and party members who feared a backlash should a mid-term poll be imposed on the people. However, the mandate of office is to govern and not mark time.

The Editorial Board

Hillary Clinton and Obama are locked in a tight race despite earlier polls that indicated the Illinois senator was poised to run away with the vote. Even though the former first lady's New Hampshire showing wasn't as bad as the polls predicted, her single-digit win against a political upstart has to be a disappointment to the well-connected, well-financed Clinton campaign.

Nonetheless, Clinton's spin doctors were pointing to a come-from-behind performance, blithely ignoring that she was the self-proclaimed front-runner only two weeks ago. Of course, the first vote had not been cast then.

The race is far from over, with the Michigan primaries next week, South Carolina later this month and a mother lode scheduled for Feb. 5 when some of the nation's largest states - including California and New York - pick delegates to this summer's nominating conventions.
